I turn 39 tomorrow (see, no secrets from you).  As I look back on the last three decades (eeeek! make that four), here are some nuggets of wisdom that I picked up over the years (and wish someone had told me sooner):

  • Drink less coffee (still working on this one).
  • Don’t judge others – assume that everyone’s doing the best they can.
  • Don’t worry about what others think of you (they have their own s^&t to pull together).
  • It’s ok to make mistakes (what better way to learn?).
  • Sometimes, bad things that happened to you turn out to be some the best things that happened to you (even if you didn’t know it back then).
  • Laugh more.
  • Hang out more with friends.
  • Stay away from negative people who drain your energy and spirit (you know who they are).
  • Not everyone is going to like you, and that’s ok.
  • Travel when you are still young (but have the money for it).
  • Weight loss is not all that tough (wooohooo!!), if you apply your mind.
  • Be the best you can be.
  • Find a job that you love – you spend most of your waking hours at work.
  • Try new things (ok, this is one of the toughest for me).
  • Be kind to your family (ideally, to others too).
  • Be compassionate to those going through difficult times, they didn’t choose their circumstances (and you could find yourself in their shoes, just as easily).
  • Eat your veggies (another tough one).
  • Don’t buy everything you want the minute you want it.
  • Talk to your parents, you will understand a lot about yourself.
  • Be your spouse’s best friend.
  • Talk to your kids, they can teach you so much.
  • Play with your kids.
  • Pay attention to who your kids’ friends are (v. important!).
  • Wake up early (this one’s easy for me).
  • Read – Books ROCK!
  • Ok, contradictory advice coming up – Make sure your head is out of the books for enough time every day, so you get a good dose of real life too.
  • Make time for music.
  • Find your passion in life, and never lose sight of it.
  • Make every day count.
  • Enjoy life.  You go this way but once.

  1. Happy birthday, friend. Have a great day and year ahead.
That list is pretty much good for me too. What is hardest for me is the third last one.
